This year’s virtual Great Smoke event, which starts online at noon EST Saturday, just got more exclusive, as ticket holders only will be able to dig into the DTT-EX-38, a 5 x 46 parejo pigtail from Steve Saka at Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. Saka has been working on the smoke since 2016 and he says it uses a rarely grown leaf of Costa Rican Morron, “which is a derivative of a Negro leaf seed strain grown primarily as wrapper,” Saka explains in a message.
“My goal behind the blend was to incorporate the smaller corona leaves as a unique ligero into the tripa recipe due to its chocolate and softer pepper notes. The blend has remained dormant for two years and remains a “work in progress”, but we crafted a very limited batch exclusively for The Great Smoke.”
The “38” in the name, Saka added, is the number of variations he developed trying to tweak it to best typify the Morron ligero. He is limiting production to 200 in 10-count bundles. Price has not yet been set and Saka says availability will likely coincide with his appearance at the Great Smoke website scheduled for 4:55 p.m. EST on February 20.
